SHAKTI’S SUMMER OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

The Roaring Fork Valley is home to so much natural beauty that it seems like a waste to stay inside on a beautiful summer day.

This is why the Shakti instructors host daily classes atop Aspen Mountain. Such sessions are designed to be accessible to all ages and skill levels.

Families and visitors often attend a class then grab a bite to eat at the Sundeck. From there, you can hike the trails down the mountain. Alternatively, the gondola ride is just as beautiful down as it is up.

Athletes in training are known to hike up Ajax, take the class, then hike back down. An hour-long stretching session is the perfect breather to break up a hike.

After a yoga session on Aspen Mountain, you are guaranteed to feel refreshed, relaxed, and a little more flexible. As an added bonus, the view from the summit is breathtaking!

The class costs $25 to participate, as well as a Gondola ticket to the summit. Contact your ALC concierge to obtain a gondola lift ticket.

3. ARJUNA YOGA

Several people engaged in Arjuna yoga exercises in a large, airy room, demonstrating various poses and techniques.

Arjuna is the only place to take an authentic hot yoga class in Aspen. Classes at this location can provide health benefits that other venues can’t. Hot pilates and bikram have been scientifically shown to:

  • Improve flexibility faster than room-temperature stretching
  • Burn more calories, even with a less intense flow
  • Build bone density
  • Nourishes the skin by promoting sweating
  • Boosts the metabolism

Arjuna offers 4 different types of classes. Each class is taught at different levels.

INFERNO HOT PILATES

Hot pilates uses the same training protocol as HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). The movements are designed to tone and trim the body. When done in a hot room, participants get a uniquely challenging workout.

BIKRAM

Bikram is a form of Hatha. A session includes 26 static asanas (poses) with interspersed breathing exercises. These classes are also held in hot steam rooms. However, they are generally less intense than inferno hot pilates.

VINYASA

Vinyasa involves flowing from one pose to the next in rapid succession. These classes are set to an upbeat soundtrack as participants learn to stretch, lengthen, and connect with their bodies. The majority of studios in town offer Vinyasa classes.

YIN

This is the only class that is not taught in a hot room. Yin is all about stimulating the joints, promoting flexibility, and opening up the back shoulders and hips. Generally, yin is less of a workout. This makes it ideal for older people to maintain mobility. The techniques are also useful for athletes who want to avoid injury.

4. ACES

A group of people practicing yoga outdoors in the mountains, enjoying the fresh air and stunning scenery.

Unlike the other places to practice yoga in Aspen, ACES isn’t a studio.

ACES stands for the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. It is a non-profit that practices conservation and regenerative agriculture. Visitors may enjoy going on guided hikes through the property. The ACES volunteers are a great source of knowledge on the local plant life, critters, and environmental history.

During the summer, ACES hosts a weekly yoga class at Hallam Lake. Everyone is invited to breathe, stretch, and relax against the beautiful backdrop of nature.

These sessions are donation-based. Attendees should bring their own mat, bug spray, water bottle, and dress for the weather. In the event of rain or wind, the class will be moved indoors.

Get in touch with Aspen Luxury Concierge if you have any questions about class schedules, transportation around the valley, or activity recommendations.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ASPEN YOGA STUDIO

An enjoyable session is all about finding the right fit.

The key to a great class is choosing the studio that meets your needs and fits your skill level. It’s a good thing there are so many studios to choose from!

Aspen Luxury Concierge frequently matches clients with the perfect experience. Our expertise includes studio recommendations.

Here are the factors that we use to determine which class will be best for the client:

DESIRED TYPE OF MOVEMENT

ALC guests are practicing yoga Aspen at a luxurious location with relaxing atmosphere.

There are 16 different types of yoga that are all very different from one another.

The first thing an ALC concierge considers is the type of movement. Not every style is a good fit for every yogi.

If you really want to do hot pilates, then O2 or Arujana would probably be the best fit for you.

Whereas most studios offer classes for Vinyasa, Hatha, Bikram, restorative, and Yin. The level of meditation can vary.

ATMOSPHERE AND AMENITIES

Experienced yogis know that one studio can be very different from the next.

Some studios are very focused on contemplation and healing. Others are all about chiseling and toning the body. Studios can be relaxed and beginner friendly. They can also be very intense. Visitors need a studio that fits their vibe.

While the atmosphere can be hard to gauge before you book the class, the amenities of the space can be a good way to deduce if it is the right fit for you.

For example, classes that take place outdoors are often very laid back. Outdoor mindfulness is often about the social experience as much as the physical.

Studios that offer mindful and spiritual amenities generally have a more calming atmosphere and attendeess are encouraged to engage in healing.

As fellow fitness enthusiasts, the ALC team knows all about the local offerings. If you would like a personal studio recommendation, simply ask your concierge!

QUALITY AND STYLE OF INSTRUCTORS

The instructor can make or break a yoga class.

It’s important to find an instructor who is an engaging leader. The best instructors know how to tailor the movements to the attendees. This can mean giving individual adjustments based on unique needs.

The best way to evaluate an instructor is to read about their background and qualifications on the studio’s website.

You may recognize the names of teachers and institutions who the instructors have studied under.

This is a great way to find an instructor who has a similar style and approach as instructors you’ve worked with before.

LOCATION AND CONVENIENCE

For example, there’s Aspen Gay Ski Week in January, proving why winter is the best time to visit Aspen. This weeklong party is about more than enjoying the slopes (although there’s plenty of that!), this is also seven days of fundraisers, performances, film screenings, art events, bingo brunches, and themed late-night parties.

You can dance the night away at a hot club like The Snow Lodge, which has housed performances from major names in the DJ scene like Diplo and Zedd. You certainly won’t feel the winter chill!

Switching gears, Aspen at Christmas Time is a wonder to behold. Towering Christmas trees are decorated and lit, ushering in the spirit of the season. Summer in Aspen brings pleasant temperatures ranging from 50°F to 80°F, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for outdoor adventures.

Those who say the best time to visit Aspen, CO is in the summer are certainly on to something. The weather has warmed, the flowers have bloomed and are now showing their best hues, the sun is out for the most hours all year, and the temperatures are warm but not sweltering.

In other words, the conditions are perfect for getting outside and enjoying the wealth of activities the mountainous terrain of Aspen has in abundance.

Take long hikes under the vivid summer sun, explore the Sunnyside Trail or Hunter Creek on a bike, and continue to put that fishing license to good use at the Roaring Fork River or Frying Pan River.

Make sure you take the time to stop and smell the flowers. So many of them bloom beautifully by July, from the enchanting Colorado columbine to dreamy mountain bluebells, white locoweed (fun fact: it’s also sometimes purple or red!), and breathtakingly vivid Indian paintbrushes.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ASPEN ACCORDING TO…

With Aspen a playground of indoor and outdoor attractions all year long, it’s unsurprising that the definition of when the best time to visit Aspen, Colorado varies, even among the locals!

If you’re visiting primarily for events or climate, here are some suggestions for when to plan your luxury vacation

EVENTS

DJ Tessa is playing Aspen, at one of the best time to visit Aspen

Aspen’s event calendar is always evolving, so when you should come see us depends on the type of event you’re interested in.

For example, if you love music festivals and arts/cultural events, those are more prevalent in the summer. You can experience a dose of the vibrant culture here, taking it with you when you go.

Wintertime also has its fair share of performances and DJ events, although tucked away in warm clubs to combat the chill.

PRICES

While many premier destinations are most inexpensive during the winter, the opposite is true in Aspen. Prices peak at Christmastime, as everyone wants to see the frosty-tipped lighted trees and ride around the snowy town in a carriage pulled by horses.

The price escalation continues through January. Although the holidays have passed by then, snowboarding and skiing are at their most popular. In February, the costs stay high through President’s Day weekend (this is the second most expensive weekend of the year to visit Aspen), and don’t buckle much through March which continues through the spring.

Another period when travel costs in Aspen pick back up is in the summer, usually around June. The price highs continue through August, as the perfect weather here attracts many visitors eager for music festivals, mountain biking, and exploring Roaring Fork Valley or Aspen Mountain.

CLIMATE

The athlete came to Aspen in winter, one of the best times of the year

The four seasons of Aspen deliver variable weather changes. The ski season is cold, with highs between 20 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the locals don’t mind braving the winter chill, and most tourists don’t either if it means an opportunity for snowboarding or skiing at Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, Ajax or Buttermilk Ski Resort.

Autumn is another period of cold, although milder than the winter. You will need a jacket by day and a coat at night, as temperatures can plummet into the 20s by November.

The spring and summer, with their milder but warmer temps and longer hours of daylight, are most people’s favorites for outdoor activities in Aspen outside of ski season.

SEASONAL ATTRACTIONS

The attractions on Aspen’s annual calendar will envelope you in the moods and moments of the season. Although it’s hard to choose between spring flower-viewing, summer hiking, and autumn leaf-peeping, Aspen at Christmastime is too special not to experience at least once in your lifetime.

People enjoying a ski lift ride, ascending a winter landscape with a chair lift in the background.

When people come to Aspen, it’s usually to ski or snowboard – Aspen is a ski town after all! The official ski season starts in November and runs through April, depending on the weather.

No matter your skill level, Aspen is a great place to learn, improve your technique, or challenge yourself.

There’s something for everyone on each of Aspen’s 4 mountains:

  • Buttermilk Mountain is known for being a beginner-friendly place to ski due to the number of green and blue runs. However, Buttermilk also hosts the X Games each year. Main and west Buttermilk are well-maintained and free of obstacles, while the tiehack area is best for uphill skiers. There are 2 options for dining on the mountain: Cliffhouse, which is located at the summit, and Bumps, which is at the base.
  • Aspen Highlands represents everything special about skiing in Aspen. Highlands is home to Cloud 9, where you can ski in, party, spray champagne, and ski out. The Highland Bowl is a particularly challenging area as you have to hike the bowl to “earn your runs.” However, conquering the bowl is like a rite of passage and an experience you won’t soon forget. Most of the runs on Highland are blues and blacks, with mogul terrain and glades, for an additional challenge.
  • Aspen Mountain has the most spectacular view of the Elk Mountains. Ajax is known for being the local’s mountain because it has runs that offer a little bit of everything. If you only have 1 day to ski Aspen, hit Aspen Mountain. At the base of the mountain is the legendary Ajax Tavern; halfway up is Bonnie’s, which is known for having the best pancakes in town. At the top of Aspen Mountain is the Sundeck, which has an exceptional view over the Elk Mountains.
  • Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort has the most vertical area of any ski area, serviced by 17 different ski lifts. Snowmass is best for beginner and intermediate skiers, making it ideal for families. Most of the ski in/ski out accommodations in Aspen give you direct access to Snowmass slopes.

2. SNOWSHOEING EXCURSIONS

Don’t want to ski or snowboard?

That’s okay!

There are plenty of things to do in Aspen in winter besides ski or snowboard. Snowshoeing is a great way of getting out in nature and experiencing the natural beauty of Aspen.

Because snowshoeing is so easy, almost anyone can pick it up relatively quickly. It is also a low-impact form of cardio that burns over 600 calories an hour, so you get a great workout without putting too much strain on your joints.

The team at Aspen Luxury Concierge recommends that snowshoers check out Aspen Golf Course and North Star Loop.

The Bernese Boulevard Trail on Aspen Golf Course is dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along for some exercise. North Star Loop is a 1.6 mile trail that is consistently one of the most well-groomed places to snowshoe.
