Golf Courses in Aspen CO: tips and tricks for golfing at altitude

The city of Aspen sits 7,908 feet above sea level. Not only does the air feel thicker, but the alpine climate also means that the air is quite dry compared to sea-level cities. Most visitors to Aspen feel just fine, although a little winded, as long as they stay hydrated, eat energy-rich foods, and avoid alcohol on their first day at elevation. However, the altitude doesn’t just affect your body, it will also affect your golf game.

At altitude, a golf ball will go roughly 1.2% farther for every 1,000 feet in elevation gain  than it would at sea level. Since Aspen is nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, you can expect a 200-yard carry to fly 220 yards. Before tee off, hit the driving range or do a breakfast ball to get a feel for how far the ball will go.

The elevation will also affect your shot trajectory. At altitude, there is less air density, meaning the air does not impact the ball’s trajectory as much. Your shots will be straighter with a flatter profile and more rollout. To compensate, hit higher than you usually would and prioritize control.

Dress Code for Golfing in Aspen

To preserve the character and ambiance of the course, all public and private golf courses in Aspen enforce specific attire requirements. While these guidelines may vary by club, here are the general standards for what visitors should wear when golfing:

  • Golfers must be dressed in standard golf attire with collared shirts.
  • Turtle necks, tank tops, jerseys, dresses, swimwear, biking attire, jeans, and flip-flops are prohibited on the course or in the clubhouse.
  • Metal spiked shoes are not allowed.
  • Shorts for both male and female golfers should be around 3 inches above the knee; if a golfer is wearing shorts that are deemed “too short” by the staff, they may be asked to change.
  • Golf shoes must be worn on the course. Tennis shoes, sneakers, heels, boots, and cycling shoes are now allowed.
  • All golfers must appear put-together with their shirts tucked in and their garments free of stains or wrinkles.

If you arrive in Aspen and realize you forgot to pack your golf attire, your concierge will be happy to do a little personal shopping. Alternatively, there is some excellent shopping in Aspen, so you could also visit the town to purchase new clothing items.

Things to Consider When Choosing Between Aspen, Colorado Wedding Venues

Before you set your heart on a certain venue, make sure that it meets all your needs for your special day. As expert event planners, the ALC team often advises brides and grooms to consider these 6 things before settling on a venue:

  1. Guest List – The most important aspect of a venue is that it can comfortably hold all your guests. Most spaces can fit more people for a standing reception than for a seated ceremony.
  2. Wedding Style – Your wedding is all about you, so it should fit your style and tell your love story. Some couples may enjoy a more rustic venue, like T-Lazy-7 Ranch, whereas others may prefer an opulent setting such as The Little Nell.
  3. Amenities and Services – Some venues come with certain services, like set-up, catering, music, and break down. If you forgo an all-inclusive venue, you may need to DIY some aspects of your wedding or arrange multiple extra vendors.
  4. Location and Accessibility – Keep in mind that venues closer to downtown are easier for guests to get to than remote mountain locations. If all your guests are coming from out of town, a wedding at a hotel may be the best option.
  5. Rehearsal Dinner – Some venues are better for rehearsal dinners than others. Couples can choose to do a rehearsal dinner at a restaurant in town or utilize their venue for the gathering.
  6. Choose Local Vendors – The photographers, florists, and caterers in town have experience working at many of the major Aspen wedding venues. Their expertise will give you a smoother, easier wedding day.

Wintersköl is a local tradition that is all about greeting the winter season. Although it is traditionally held in January, it has been moved to mid-December to be more seasonally appropriate.

The festivities sprawl out over the town with the annual Soupsköl contest, ice sculpture carving, fireworks, maker’s markets, live music, and the torch parade down Aspen Mountain.

5. Hit the Slopes on Skis or a Snowboard

A skier glides down a pristine snowy slope, capturing the essence of winter sports in Aspen's December scenery.

Aspen, Colorado in December is the prime ski and snowboard destination in the state. You have 4 ski resorts to choose from:

  1. Ajax – Closest to downtown, several hotels have ski in/ski out access, and it has something for all skill levels.
  2. Buttermilk – The best mountain for beginners and families
  3. Aspen Highlands – The most difficult mountain, which is home to the Highland Bowl, a legendary ski area of black diamonds where you have to “earn your runs”
  4. Snowmass Mountain – The mountain local to Snowmass Village, which is home to several terrain parks, and is known for having liminal lift lines.

Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, book your adventure with ALC! We offer special ski and snowboard packages that include rentals, gear tuneups, lift tickets, on-mountain storage, personal shopping for new gear, and transportation to all 4 mountains.

6. Dine in Style at Altitude

Cozy restaurant in Aspen with wooden tables and chairs, perfect for dining in December's winter charm.

Some of the best food in town isn’t even in town; it’s 11,000 feet above sea level. There are several restaurants on the mountains that can only be accessed by skiing or on a snowcat.

Sam’s is a well-regarded restaurant located at the summit of Snowmass, offering stunning views. Guests can indulge in a generous serving of freshly made pasta or relax with an afternoon snack and cocktail.

Another notable casual establishment is Elk Camp Restaurant at the summit of Snowmass Mountain. The roaring fires will warm you from the outside while the grass-fed beef chili warms you from the outside!

Cloud 9 Alpine Bistro is the most well-known on-mountain dining experience. The vibe ranges from party central to luxury fine dining. The Cloud 9 après ski parties are legendary, with everyone dancing and spraying champagne like it’s the last time they’ll ever party. Once the ski day ends, Cloud 9 transforms into a decadent Swiss dining experience menu with curated wine pairings in front of a roaring fire.

The only thing better than the food is the view! Please note that snowcat dinners are very popular in Aspen in December. Please book your dinner adventure through ALC well in advance.

7. Year-Round Uphilling

A skier navigates a snow-covered trail, showcasing the beauty of Aspen's winter hiking opportunities in December.

The weather in Aspen, Colorado in December is ideal for some winter skinning or uphilling. Locals recommend Independence Pass as an easy skinning trail. If you want a challenge, Smuggler Mountain Road or Buttermilk. During the day, Buttermilk allows uphill traffic, so uphillers can trek up the mountain and then ride the ski lift back down for free

Keep in mind that winter uphilling is very different from summer uphilling. Here are a few things you’ll need to know before your trek:

  • Dress in layers with a waterproof coat. Wear a base layer that breathes and wicks moisture away from your skin.
  • Check the weather forecast and always have a physical copy of the trail map.
  • Choose trails that are close to civilization, especially as a beginner.
  • Always uphill in groups. You may consider hiring a professional uphilling guide to join your trip.
  • Only uphill on trails that are designated multi-use. Do not uphill on ski runs.
  • Wear proper foot gear, either uphilling shoes designed for winter use, snowshoes, or shoe spikes. Locals swear by Yaktrax as the go-to brand for maintaining traction.
  • Poles are recommended for uphillers of all ages and skill levels.

If you have any questions about winter uphilling in Aspen, contact Aspen Luxury Concierge. Our team can recommend gear, handle gear rental, do trail research for you, hire your uphilling guide, and make a reservation for a hot post-uphill meal.

8. Take a Whirl on Ice Skates

A woman wearing a coat and white hat glides on an ice rink in Aspen, surrounded by a winter landscape in December.

Silver Circle, the outdoor rink, is situated at the base of Ajax and is particularly popular among beginners and casual skaters, including children and families.

The indoor rinks, Aspen Ice Garden and Lewis Ice, both offer free skating for visitors and host drop-in hockey games. Additionally, experienced skaters have the opportunity to reserve the ice for private skating sessions or events..

9. Experience the Scenery on a Snowmobile

A person rides an orange snowmobile through the snowy landscape of Aspen in December, enjoying the winter adventure.

Snowmobiling is an excellent alternative to cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and uphilling. The Roaring Fork Valley is home to so much natural beauty, but in the winter, much of it is not accessible by car.

A snowmobile tour allows you to experience the snowy mountains without physical strain. This option is ideal for adults of all ages as well as kids and teens.

The drops and elevation changes deliver a similar adrenaline rush to that of a traditional roller coaster.

The Alpine Coaster is situated on Snowmass Mountain near Elk Camp.

The extensive wine list has something for all palettes. Their signature cocktails utilize rosemary, piney gin, ginger, cranberries, and mint to bring a hint of winter into the beverages.

WHAT ARE THE HALLMARKS OF LUXURY PICNICS NEAR ASPEN?

The distinction between a standard picnic and a luxury picnic is the decor, seating arrangements, and intention. An elegant picnic is about presentation and quality.

  • For upscale picnic experiences, guests are not seated directly on the grass or on a picnic blanket. Instead, a low dining table with small chairs or poufs is set up at the location to enhance the dining experience. This setup includes fully coordinated place settings, tablecloths, floral arrangements, and serving dishes that align with the chosen color palette.
  • Unlike standard picnics, bespoke picnics are meticulously planned ahead of time to foster enduring relationships.

If planning a luxury picnic sounds like a lot of work, you’d be right!

This is where Aspen Luxury Concierge provides assistance.

When our clients express interest in a picnic, we pull out all the stops to give them an incredible, effortless experience. Whether it’s for a bachelorette party, engagement, anniversary, date, or a get together, let ALC curate a stunning picnic just for you.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE ASPEN PICNIC EXPERIENCE: 5 THINGS TO CONSIDER

1. WHAT ARE YOU CELEBRATING?

Are you planning a special outing with a loved one? Perhaps you’re arranging a reunion with childhood friends, or embracing the popular trend of hosting wedding events picnic-style in a picturesque outdoor setting? Or perhaps you are enjoying Aspen for the summer and wish to enjoy its natural beauty in an elegant manner?

The intent behind your picnic determines the menu, seating arrangements, extras, and decor.

2. WHO IS COMING?

A picnic in Aspen for a small group of friends or a date can be very different from a picnic for your extended family, work colleagues, or parents. If older adults will be present, then ALC may recommend a more accessible trail with less hiking.

If your party includes small children, ALC recommends a picnic area with easy access to bathrooms and relatively low foot traffic.

3. WHEN WILL THE PICNIC TAKE PLACE?

The best time to visit Aspen in the summer is mid-June to late August. This is also the best time for a picnic because it is after the spring showers have subsided and everything is green. Aspen summers are typically comfortably warm, with enough cloud cover to beat the heat.

However, fall in Aspen is equally charming, with September and October offering sunny days and cooler evenings. The stunning autumn foliage provides a breathtaking backdrop, making it a great time for a cozy, scenic picnic.

4. WHAT FOOD PREFERENCES AND RESTRICTIONS DOES YOUR PARTY HAVE?

Be sure to give your concierge a list of your party’s allergies and dietary restrictions. Whether you require a vegetarian, vegan, keto, paleo, plant-based, high protein, low fat, kosher, or halal meal, the ALC team can pack you picnic-friendly foods or get catering from a local Aspen restaurant

5. WHAT IS YOUR BUDGET?

Events must have a budget, especially if your Aspen picnic is a wedding event, work gathering, or a date. Let ALC know your budget and if you would like any extra add-ons, such as a sommelier for a private wine tasting, a private chef, lawn games, or live music.

ALC’S SERVICES FOR LUXURY PICNICS IN ASPEN

Your concierge will handle the rest once you let ALC know your picnic ideas and needs.

Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • Recommending good picnic spots that are suitable for your activity needs. For example, easy to access for older adults; near good spots for hiking, climbing, or fly fishing; child and family friendly; and with a good view of your preferred geological feature.
  • Making a customized daily itinerary.
  • Recommending the best time of day for a picnic depending on the forecasted weather and the goal of your event.
  • Arranging private transportation to either the trailhead or directly to your picnic area, depending on accessibility.
  • Arriving early to the picnic to reserve a good spot.
  • Packing the picnic, setting up your picnic area, taking down your picnic set up, and (if necessary) acquiring permits.
  • Renting lawn games like cornhole, giant Jenga, spike ball, and croquet for your event.
  • Booking a sommelier, private chef, DJ, or other performer. If you would like floral arrangements as centerpieces, your concierge can also pick those up from the florist.
  • Personal shopping for Aspen picnic necessities like sunscreen, additional hiking gear, extra VOSS waters, and sun hats.

Aspen Luxury Concierge also reminds clients to abide by the Leave No Trace principle. This means getting all trash into the designated receptacle and preventing teens at the event from carving their initials onto anything in nature.

ALC also recommends using sun protection and staying hydrated.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LUXURY PICNICS IN ASPEN?

Every local can tell you that Aspen picnics are the best way to experience all the natural beauty of the Roaring Fork Valley. They are also a fantastic way to celebrate life’s milestones and spend time with friends and family.

Compared to having an indoor venue for an engagement, reunion, or birthday party, a luxury picnic is a healthier way to celebrate. Guests are getting their Vitamin D, staying active, and getting their steps in. There are also the health benefits of fresh air, mindfulness, and outdoor exploration that come with a picnic.

A picnic in Aspen is also the perfect way to unwind after a busy quarter. You can end your workout with a nutritious meal out in nature or go on a hike after you’ve fueled up. In the fresh alpine air, you can take a load off to sit back and enjoy the scenery. Certain outdoor picnic areas do not have cell service, so no one can bother you on your getaway.

As an added benefit, luxury picnics are very aesthetically pleasing and very Instagramable. They are the perfect backdrop for your proposal photos or your outdoor family portraits.

Ski-Inspired Sips and Shopping

This is another excellent opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee while your skis are being tuned.

While you sip your drink, you could even buy yourself a new pair of Dresner sunglasses. All without leaving the building.

The menu is what you’d expect of a café. However, there are a few gems to try, such as:

  • Wildwood Chocolate: Sold by the box; made with natural ingredients in Portland
  • Salty Goat: Salted caramel latte with oat milk, Schladerer, raspberry spirits, and whipped cream
  • Hot apple pie: Latte with almond milk, vanilla flavoring, Schladerer apple brandy, and cinnamon
  • Honey Bear: Apple cider with orange peel, Barenjager honey liqueur, and cinnamon
  • The Smuggler: Hot chocolate mixed with peppermint Schnapps.

Before you embark on your winter adventure, it’s important to be prepared! Before you hit the slopes, you’ll need a gear tune up.

Contact your ALC concierge for effortless gear rentals, tune up appointments, and life tickets. We will handle the details while you get to sip your warm, cozy drink.

7. Jour de Fête

Location: 710 E Durant Ave, Aspen, CO 81611

Hours: 6:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday. 7:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday and Sunday

Jour de Fête is a favorite among visitors who stay at The Little Nell, the most well-known luxury hotel in town. Its central location makes it the perfect spot to grab breakfast, which is served all day.

Unlike other Aspen, Colorado coffee shops, Jour de Fête offers a distinctly French atmosphere. The portions focus on quality rather than quantity.

The extensive outdoor seating also makes it the ideal place to people watch, read the paper, and catch up with friends.

Jour de Fête’s menu is standard for what you’d expect of Aspen coffee shops. What makes it unique is the add-ons to “bulletproof” your drink. This means adding extra ingredients to give you additional health benefits.

Some of the most popular add-ons are:

  • MCT oil:  A good source of energy and an ingredient known to aid in weight loss
  • Grass-fed ghee: Ghee is a type of clarified butter that had less lactose and has historically been used in Ayurvedic practices
  • Collagen protein: Collagen is what skin is made of, so additional collagen in the diet can have anti-aging properties
  • Innerfuel Prebiotics: Prebiotic supplements can help maintain a healthy gut microbiome

What is So Special About Aspen Coffee Shops?

You can find a coffee shop on most streets no matter where you travel. However, not all coffee shops are the same. Coffee culture varies significantly by location, even within the same state.

Compared to the rest of Colorado, the coffee shops in Aspen just have a certain je ne sais quoi. They are cozier, more artfully decorated. Rather than rush in and rush back out, visitors normally sit down to drink their beverage slowly.

The cafés are the kind of place where you make a new friend. Or discover that you are an espresso person after all. Perhaps it’s because skiing and pumpkin spice lattes are just meant to go together. There’s just something special about sipping a hot drink and watching the snowfall.

Community Engagement

Aspen’s coffee shops are more than places to grab a drink; they are vital parts of the community, fostering connections and supporting local initiatives.

Here are some key ways these coffee shops engage with and enrich the Aspen community:

  • Local Events and Gatherings: Many coffee shops host events like live music at Bear Den, creating lively atmospheres. Art exhibits, book readings, and charity fundraisers are common, providing a platform for local talent and community causes.
  • Supporting Local Businesses: Unravel Coffee & Bar and Local Coffee House & Eatery source local ingredients, ensuring fresh products for customers. This practice strengthens the local economy and promotes sustainable agriculture.
  • Environmental Initiatives: AspenX Café and Felix Coffee Roasting Co prioritize eco-friendly practices, such as compostable cups and utensils. They also support fair trade coffee growers, aligning with the community’s values.
  • Charity and Outreach: Mawa’s Kitchen collaborates with local charities to provide meals and support to those in need. Many coffee shops actively participate in charitable activities and outreach programs, making a tangible difference.
  • Creating Social Spaces: Cozy seating and communal tables at Paradise Bakery & Café and Pyrenees Cafe encourage guests to linger and socialize. These welcoming atmospheres foster connections among locals and visitors, making the cafés vital community hubs.
